My friend says I have to travel
Says I can then learn from people
I told her “most people are bewakoof”
With me she wouldn’t agree
In a way envy her
I who have become far too cynical
About people and the world
At the same time
The people we can learn from
Are few and far between in this world
And a cheaper and less tiresome way
Is to understand oneself
We are all pretty much alike
Wanting the same damn things
Sulking when we do not get them
And happy when we do
In see-saw like manner
Once up, once down
Tired am I
Of this charade called life
Where sorrow abounds
And joy is a reluctant visitor
Socrates said it right
“All knowledge is within
And I am only a midwife”
Let me then not wander the globe
I will sit at home
And in silence let the hours pass
Paying attention
To that which projects this world
You know what I mean
Yes, the mind.
