What Are We Searching For When Nothing is Lost

Yes, planes will crash

And trains will collide

God is not out to comfort you

But to confront you

With the fate that awaits us all

No, I do not mean just death

Death will anyway come

To some too soon

To some too late,

I am talking about

The headaches and heartaches

That tug at your soul

As it goes in search of love and truth

And finds none in this world

Except insofar as one loves oneself

And oneself is the truth

But like a herd of sheep

We follow, we obey

Unable to know the way

Except insofar as

Someone else points it out

We throng the temples

Throng the seashore to see the sunset

We frequent the nightclubs

We get drunk on some songs

We frequent friend’s houses

But the friend’s heart is somewhere else

Looking at a distant shore

And yet in the end

Ending our lives

With only sighs.
