Stop Searching For Perfect Labels: This teaching also changes how we judge other people. We often expect spiritual people to behave in one particular way all the time. We expect them to be endlessly calm, soft-spoken and predictable. But such expectations can create another form of attachment. A person who has developed inner freedom may not fit our preferred image of spirituality. The more useful question is not, “Does this person look spiritual?” but “Are they controlled by their impulses and attachments?” The same question can be turned inward. Instead of constantly creating labels for ourselves, we can notice which patterns still control us.
