The PERMA model is a scientific theory of psychological well-being and happiness created by psychologist Martin Seligman.
It states that human flourishing depends on five core building blocks. You can read a deep dive in this overview of the PERMA model.
The Five Core Elements
- P – Positive Emotion: Feeling joy, gratitude, hope, and love. It is about boosting pleasant feelings and optimism about the past, present, and future.
- E – Engagement: Being completely absorbed in tasks or hobbies. This deep focus creates a “flow state” where you lose track of time and feel fully stimulated.
- R – Relationships: Having strong, healthy bonds with other people. Feeling loved, supported, and valued by family, friends, or a community is essential to well-being.
- M – Meaning: Serving a purpose that is bigger than yourself. This includes using your personal strengths to help others or contribute to a larger cause.
- A – Accomplishment: Pursuing and achieving meaningful goals. Working toward mastery builds self-efficacy and a sense of pride.
