Why God Cannot Afford to Give us Free Will if Karma Theory is Correct

There is a general acceptance these days by most people the world over that God ensures that we get what we “deserve”, both the good and the bad results for our actions such as they might be good or bad.

Now, my thesis is that if God has to implement this ordering in the world where everyone gets what they deserve exactly when they are to receive it, then he cannot afford to give us free will and still be able to implement his plan for the universe as per the karma theory.

Why?

Consider one such karmic result where God has determined that say Ramesh has to meet with an accident on Nampally Road in Hyderabad, the accident being caused by a speeding vehicle being driven by Mallesh on November 1, 2026 at 11:40 am.

For this event to happen, both those drivers have to arrive at the spot of accident at the precise time, and if either of them is late by even say 5 seconds, the accident will not happen.

Now, for them to not be delayed by even 5 seconds, let us consider for simplicity what all has to happen in the life of Ramesh on the morning of that day (and similar considerations would of course apply to the life of Mallesh unfolding on the morning of that day).

Ramesh has to get out of the house at a specific time to arrive on time, which means a lot of things have to happen for that to happen, and here I will give only a short list of possible scenarios, but first of all of course, Ramesh’s plans to go there should not change be it due to some mood swing or some sudden illness or some phone call from a friend:

  1. As Ramesh is stepping out of the house, his wife should not suddenly get it into her mind to say or ask him to do something that would delay him, so in that sense she cannot be allowed to have such freedom or free will, which would of course if pushed back would mean her whole life, including her current relationship with her husband, should have proceeded in a certain manner for her to not do anything to delay him, whatever that anything could be.
  2. Once Ramesh hits the road, the other vehicles should proceed on the road in such a manner that no driver delays Ramesh so as to delay him in reaching the site of accident, which means the current thoughts of those drivers cannot be left to themselves whereby they may drive in such a manner so as to stymie the plans of God for Ramesh, which would again mean they should have been made to be the kind of persons they are in the present to be such drivers who would do as is expected of them on that morning (after all, God does not control us second by second nor bring about things in our lives “magically” but will make it seem like it is we who are choosing to speed up or slow down on the road that morning, else the game would be up and everyone would “know” that they are NOT the doers but God is, and the world drama or Leela cannot unfold as it is meant to as planned by God if everyone “knows” they are not the doers).
  3. Also, all the thoughts and choices of the other motorists who should NOT be on the road Ramesh is travelling on at that very time so that there is no traffic congestion or worse still traffic jam which would delay Ramesh, should be tightly regulated, which in turn again would imply so many other things in their life and the life stories of the people they are connected with should be tightly regulated, else suppose 4 or 5 people in the area where Ramesh is staying become seriously ill around that time, then the ambulances that transport them to the hospital would delay Ramesh, etc.
  4. Now, I leave it to your imagination what other things should be tightly regulated, like say what Swiggy meals are being delivered at that time, what shop on that route sends out someone to buy something from somewhere on that route, etc., etc., etc.

Now, apply the same logic to what has to happen in Mallesh’s life.

Moreover, the weather that day has to be just right for the accident to happen at that precise time, else a sudden downpour could delay one or both drivers.

etc., etc.

I think you get the picture.

Now, the above kind of reasoning applies to every karmic result that has to come to fruition in all of our lives — think a little deeply and you will understand what I mean.

If we don’t have free will, then we are NOT the thinkers of our thoughts nor the doers of our actions.

If we realize the above philosophy, we will be liberated, as per a lot of people, from Ramana Maharshi to Ramakrishna Paramahamsa to Ramesh Balsekar, etc.

Think why.
