I’m 60, But I’m Not Dead! Finding Myself Again After Losing My Husband

I’m 60, but I’m not dead. And after losing my husband, I’ve been discovering just how much life I still want to live.

Losing my husband changed nearly everything about my everyday life. The companionship, the familiar routines, the future we imagined together. Suddenly, I was facing a life I hadn’t planned for, trying to understand who I was without the person I’d shared so much of it with.

Now, more than two years into widowhood, I’m finding that rebuilding a life after loss isn’t just about learning how to be alone. It’s about rediscovering yourself, finding purpose again, staying curious, and allowing yourself to experience new things, even when they feel uncomfortable.

At 60, I’m still learning. I’m still changing. I still care about how I look and feel, the places I want to go, the people I want to meet, and the experiences I haven’t had yet.

Some days I feel confident and independent. Other days I feel uncertain about what comes next. And I’ve discovered that both can be true.

This isn’t a story about having grief figured out or leaving the past behind. It’s about recognizing that life continues to unfold, even after a heartbreaking loss.

If you’re navigating life after the death of a spouse, adjusting to living alone, or wondering what your next chapter might look like after 60, I hope you’ll find something familiar in my story.
