The “I Am” is the Pot. Consciousness is the Clay.

What is the “I am”?

The “I Am” is the reflection of Consciousness (aka Brahman, Self, Awareness, the Absolute) in the mind.

So, it is also referred to as “Reflected Consciousness” (Chidabhasa — from Chit or Consciousness and Abhasa or Shadow or Reflection), with Consciousness/Brahman often being referred to as Pure Consciousness, pure in the sense existing by itself without any need or dependence on anything else apart from itself.

Why is the “I Am” a pot?

The “I Am” is but a name-and-form or an appearance of Consciousness in this phenomenal or manifest world.

But, what we think of ourselves as is not as this “I Am” (though we are aware “we are”, which is nothing but the “I Am”) but as “I am this” and “I am that”, the “this” and “that” being the various identities of ourselves we form around the body and mind and their characteristics, their past history and achievements and failings, their current state, and their future possibilities, as in “I am tall” / “I am fair-skinned” / “I am fat” / “I am Caucasian” / “I am ill” / “I have cancer” / “I was born” / “I will die” etc. (with reference to the body), and “I am intelligent” / “I am stupid” / “I am good at math” / “I am sad” / “I am happy” / “I am vexed” / “I have existential angst” / “I hate medicine” / “I am capable of more” / “I am in love” / “I am Brahmin” / “I am Reddy” / “I am Indian” / “I am Hindu” / “I am poor” etc. (mostly with reference to the mind [and heart]), and these various identities form our “ego” that keeps shifting based on the various situations we find ourselves in.

Nisargadatta Maharaj points out in his book “I Am That”:

“The ‘I am’ is in the world; but it is the key which can open the door out of the world. … If only they go deeply into the fact of being and discover the vastness and the glory to which the ‘I am’ is the door, and cross the door and go beyond, their life will be full of happiness and light. Believe me, the effort needed is as nothing when compared with the discoveries arrived at. … The door that locks you in, is also the door that lets you out. The ‘I am’ is the door. Stay at it until it opens. As a matter of fact, it is open, only you are not at it. You are waiting at the non-existent painted doors, which will never open.” (https://selfrealization.blog/2025/11/29/be-still-and-know-the-i-am-path-of-self-realization/)

What are the “non-existent painted doors“?

They are the “I am this” and “I am that”, the ego.

Why is the “I Am” NOT “real”?

As John Wheeler points out, in deep sleep the “I Am” is absent because there is NO mind in deep sleep and without the mind there can be no reflection of Consciousness as the “I Am” in the mind (https://selfrealization.blog/2026/11/02/everything-after-the-i-am-is-a-lie-john-wheeler/).

Why is the “I Am” a door?

When you stay with the “I Am” to the exclusion of everything else, it means you are NOT dwelling on any of the “I am this” and “I am that” but just on the pure “I am” feeling.

And what is that but a meditation / contemplation because all the “I am this” and “I am that” are the various thoughts and feelings coursing through our mind, and when the attention is withdrawn from them, the minds falls silent, which is meditation, which is summa iru.

That is why Nisargadatta Maharaj says:

“I simply followed his [Guru’s] instruction which was to focus the mind on pure being ‘I am’, and stay in it. I used to sit for hours together, with nothing but the ‘I am’ in my mind and soon peace and joy and a deep all-embracing love became my normal state. In it all disappeared – myself, my Guru, the life I lived, the world around me. Only peace remained and unfathomable silence.” (https://drive.google.com/file/d/1cdY6w8jYQ9TXbzq1-l9WC496pcR7_15M/view)
