My world, your world, the world, is composed of thoughts, feelings, sensations and perceptions. Then there is Consciousness in whose light the thoughts, feelings, sensations and perceptions are known. So, Consciousness is the subject, and thoughts, feelings, sensations and perceptions are the objects. The “I” that I am now taking to be me, the ego, is also a thought, the I-thought or the thought called “I”. Hence, this “I” that I am now taking to be me, since it is a thought, is also an object to Consciousness. But the true “I” has to be the subject. Since the “I” that I am now taking to be me, the ego, the I-thought or the thought called “I” is an object to Consciousness, it cannot be the true “I”. Hence “I” must be the Consciousness, the only true subject that presents itself to this self-enquiry.
