“I could not tell them to just trust that their pain would be taken seriously, when I’ve seen countless doctors roll their eyes at Black children in pain. I could not tell them to just trust that their relatives would receive adequate medical workups when I know that Black patients are less likely than White patients to be referred for further testing.1 I couldn’t even tell them to just trust that the hospital would be a healing environment when I’ve seen White patients chant the N word in the faces of Black patients while an all-White staff did nothing.”
