What is the explanation offered for our present happy or unhappy life? Our past karma, either in this life or in some other past life.
For argument’s sake, let us assume a past life (though even without assuming a past life my explanation that follows is equally valid). So, let us assume we did some karma in a past life because of which we are experiencing happiness or unhappiness in this life. Now, ask yourself why you did that particular karma in the past life. Doubtless that karma must have been based on the level of understanding or predisposition of your mind that led you to choose to do that particular karma and not some other karma.
Question can then be asked, what led you to have that particular level of understanding or predisposition of your mind when you did that karma. Explanation given is that it is your past karma that determines the state of your body-mind whereby you experience happiness or unhappiness as per karma done in the past.
Now, ask yourself the question how did you have a certain level of understanding or predisposition of mind in your very first birth when you did your first karma because before performing your first karma there was no past karma to give rise to that particular level of understanding or predisposition of mind. The only answer you can give for that is that the nature of your mind before you did your first karma in your first birth was not something you were responsible. And, once you were given that mind, a series of actions or karma was set in motion that has been cascading through countless lives.
Hence, how can you be responsible for the karma done by a mind that you did not create through your own karma? Hence, you cannot be the karta or the doer. The karma is merely a set of cause-effect chain set in motion by someone or something other than yourself.
What can that entity be that created your mind with certain predispositions and inclinations along with causal laws that determined the trajectory of the karmas through various lives along with their consequences except God? Hence, God alone is the doer. We are not the doers.
If you have understood the discussion thus far, ponder over it deeply and you will start to question whether even God is the doer or it is all mere imagination – this “you”, God, and karma. Think.
In every moment of time, since our evolution from a single common ancestor in the tree of evolution, there is a choice to evolve beyond the impressions of our dna and mind. In a way life itsself is a probability and entropy breaking machine in an otherwise predictable cosmos.
