Who is Wise?

पोथी पढ़ि पढ़ि जग मुआ, पंडित भया न कोय

ढाई आखर प्रेम का, पढ़े सो पंडित होय। — Kabir

इसका अर्थ है कि

संसार में बहुत से लोग बड़ी-बड़ी पुस्तकें और धर्मग्रंथ पढ़ते-पढ़ते बूढ़े हो गए और मर गए, लेकिन कोई भी सच्चा ज्ञानी या विद्वान नहीं बन सका

इसके विपरीत, यदि कोई व्यक्ति प्रेम के ‘ढाई अक्षर’ को समझ ले, तो वही सच्चा पंडित या ज्ञानी कहलाता है

Here’s the English translation:

“Reading books upon books, the whole world grew old and died, yet none became truly wise.

But one who learns the two-and-a-half letters of ‘love’ alone is the true scholar, the real knower.”

The meaning is that people spend their lives reading vast numbers of books and scriptures, yet true wisdom eludes them. In contrast, one who understands the simple essence of love attains real knowledge and becomes a true sage.
