A friend asked:
Do you naturally feel like doing it [summa iru]? Are you personally convinced that you should drop everything and sit in silence? Or is it like one of those new year resolutions?
I replied:
No, not akin to a New Year Resolution.
I want to be summa iru because my mind has understood the need for it.
If you actually read carefully all the emails I have shared in the past 2 weeks, you will understand what it is that I understand, and why I am saying it is NOT like a new year resolution.
Basically, I have lost interest in the pots, that is, in name-and-form, because any amount of “knowledge” you get, be it even so-called spiritual knowledge, metaphysical knowledge, spiritual sadhana and practices etc., is ONLY knowledge about pots and duality, but we know pot as name-and-form and duality is “unreal” or mithya. So, whatever “knowledge” you get about pots and duality is not actually knowledge because the entity about which you are claiming to be knowledgeable does not actually exist, though it seems to exist. Which is why Ramana Maharshi says at one point, “Knowledge of duality is ignorance.”
That being the case, also take into consideration the following three observations, which are sort of inter-related and implying each other and also point to the above statement about knowledge of duality, and you will know why silence (or summa iru) is the ONLY thing that will deliver wisdom or liberation:
- Ramana Maharshi — “The only language able to express the whole truth is silence.”
- Kena Upanishad — “That which the mind cannot know, but because of which the mind knows, know that alone to be Brahman and not this that people worship here.”
- Brihadaranyaka Upanishad — “You cannot see the seer of seeing, you cannot hear the hearer of hearing, you cannot think of the thinker of thought, you cannot know the Knower of knowledge. This is your Self, that is within all; everything else but this is perishable.” / “Through what, my dear, should one know the Knower?”
