A friend said she discovered early on
How when she found herself alone
That she can never be lonely
For in every aloneness there’s someone
Giving company, none other than Brahman.
At that time I wondered what she meant
But when I sit here alone tonight
All by myself at the dinner table
Enveloped warmly by a silence
That can envelope one only when
One is not clamouring for anything
I begin to understand what she meant.
