According to the Ramcharitmanas, the true chariot that guarantees victory in life and battle is the inner chariot of righteousness (Dharma-rath), explained by Lord Rama to Vibhishana when facing the demon king Ravana.
Components of the True Chariot
• The Wheels: Valor (Saujanya/Souraj) and fortitude/patience (Dhiraj) are the two sturdy wheels of the chariot.
• The Flag and Banner: Truth (Satya) and firm moral conduct (Sila) form the upright flagstaff and banner.
• The Four Horses: Strength (Bal), discrimination/intellect (Vivek), self-restraint (Dam), and benevolence or doing good to others (Parhita) are the four high-spirited horses.
• The Reins: Forgiveness (Kshama), compassion (Kripa), and equanimity or equality (Samata) act as the rope tying and controlling the horses.
• The Charioteer: Devotion and worship of God (Bhagwan-bhajan) serve as the true charioteer.
• The Weapons: Dispassion (Vairagya) is the shield, and contentment (Santosha) is the sword.
• The Armor: Charity/generosity (Dana) and a pure intellect (Buddhi) act as the finest armor.
