As the ego, nothing belongs to us, not even the body-mind that we in our state of ignorance take to be ourselves.
As Consciousness, there is nothing that is not us.
In not recognizing this, we exist in an in-between state, where we take the body-mind to be ourselves.
Once we do that, then the threats from the Hobbesian “state of nature” or existential loneliness or the sheer inadequacies of being a “limited” body-mind entity become clear to us.
Hence, we try to extend our reach or self by forging relationships, seeking and acquiring wealth and thereby possessions, seeking and acquiring knowledge about the world and ourselves, forming comforting theories about how things are, etc.
This we could say is only insofar as survival is concerned. Then, of course, we start to pursue pleasures once we feel a little more reassured about our chances of survival.
But, given how some inadequacy or the other remains over despite all our efforts, we constantly face karmic threats of one kind or another, which is why those inadequacies remain over for us to exhaust the negative consequences of our karma, that even Hobbes could not and did not take into account, which threats also sometimes become an actuality and also keep detracting from the pleasures we can get or seek.
Therefore, the ONLY lasting security, freedom, happiness, peace that we can have is the one got by realizing the illusory nature of the body-mind, realizing that the body-mind is merely and only a name-and-form and hence ONLY an appearance and NOT real, and therefore whatever threats we might have perceived earlier to ourselves as body-mind in our state of ignorance do not really exist BECAUSE the body-mind does not exist in a manner of speaking, and hence also the pleasures we seem to get from life are also equally illusory and imaginary or at any rate the happiness got from enjoying the pleasures is derived NOT from the objects or persons we think are giving us that happiness but from our own original nature of Sat-Chit-ANANDA that we temporarily experience in our body-mind when the rajasic restlessness of the mind quietens down temporarily due to the satisfaction of our desires for objects or persons and no longer hides the ANANDA of our own being of Sat-Chit-ANANDA.
